Caleb's most comprehensive teaching, on film.

Built around one idea that's shaped his playing from the start.

"One trap I had to fight is the idea that evenness equals mastery. As if making every note sound the same in colour, articulation and dynamics means you're prepared to be expressive. That mindset leads to flatness."

Work from lyricism,
not toward it.

Most training treats lyricism as the reward at the end of the fundamentals. Caleb flips it. Here, lyricism is the starting point. It's the first note of the warm-up, not the last thing you get to.

Phase 1

Lyricism as a daily mindset

Open the case and reach for music, not mechanics. Before any technical work, before any scales. Caleb shows you what his first five minutes of a day sound like.

Phase 2

Lyricism as a technical pathway

Exercises, demonstrations and playalongs for phrasing, soft dynamics, vibrato and articulation. Includes singing through the trumpet, the technique that's done more for Caleb's tension and tone than any other.

Phase 3

Lyricism as a lifelong pursuit

Imagination leads, technique follows. Applied to real repertoire (Haydn, Massenet, etc.) with Caleb walking through the choices he makes.

What's different here

Narrated practice sessions.

Caleb walks you through what he's listening for in his own playing, in real time. What he hears, what he's adjusting, what's going through his head while he practises. The internal voice of a world-class player, said out loud.

The four components of lyricism

Four things to keep in mind, every phrase.

Phrasing Flow Nuance Expression

Imitation

The ear as the primary feedback tool.

Not to sound like another player, but to refine your own ear. Caleb walks through the recordings that shaped his language and shows you how to use them.

Listening in layers

How to study a recording.

Passive listening doesn't transfer. Caleb studies recordings one layer at a time, so the listening is intentional.

Caleb Hudson

Caleb is a Juilliard graduate who spent more than ten years as the trumpeter of Canadian Brass, one of the most recorded brass ensembles in the world. The New York Times called his playing "brilliantly stylish." He won a gold medal at the International Trumpet Guild Recording Awards for his album Nothing Less, and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

In June 2024 he premiered David Biedenbender's River of Time at Carnegie Hall, and his own original composition White Rose Elegy was performed by the New York Philharmonic Brass and Canadian Brass. He's the trumpeter for Triple Cortado, and the recording artist for the new Suzuki Trumpet School, Vol. 1.

Today Caleb is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Texas at Austin. This is his most comprehensive teaching work to date. A distillation of how he thinks about lyricism, and how he practises it every day.

Got questions?

What level is this for?

Intermediate to advanced. You should be past the "is my embouchure working" stage. This is about what you do with a working embouchure. Comeback players and conservatory-level students will both find material pitched right for them.

Is this mostly classical?

Caleb's background is mostly classical, but the principles (singing through the horn, soft playing, imitation, phrasing) apply to any genre where musical line matters. Jazz and commercial players will find plenty here, particularly the work on soft dynamics and vibrato.

How long do I have access?

Lifetime. Buy once, watch forever.

Do I need the Practice Companion?

No, the course stands alone. The Companion is a printable workbook (daily warm-up, imitation library, 60-day log) for players who want extra structure. Coming soon.
